I had been waiting on this Movie for what seems like forever so when I got tickets to an Advanced Screening I screammmmmed! Yawl I was so excited to see the movie I forgot my notebook and wrote notes on the back of two long Party City receipts in light blue sparkly ink. I’m going to try my best not to spoil the entire movie but i’ll give you my scribbled highlights. If you want to miss most of the spoilers skip on down to MY COMMENTARY.
!!SPOILERS WHOLE PLOT RIGHT HERE!!
Ok so boom the Eternals are a group of 10 superheroes that have been around since the beginning of the MCU. They were placed on earth by Celestial Arishem to destroy the deviants and help advance humankind…with a much sinister twist we discover later in the movie. The group includes Ajak (Salma Hayek), Sersi (Gemma Chan), Ikaris (Richard Madden), Sprite (Lia McHugh), Thena (Angelina Jolie), Druig (Barry Keoghan), Klingo (Kumail Nanjiani), Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry), Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), and Gilgamesh (Ma Dong-seok).
The superheros all have their own unique power, some that mimic the DC Universe so much so that there was a Superman and Alfred reference in the movie. This confirmed for fans that the DC Universe is also present in the MCU which is a whole nother conversation. (P.S. I would love to see a MCU vs DC even if it’s a standalone movie that has nothing to do with anything).
Anywho the Eternals believed they destroyed all of the Deviants, split up and lived their various long lives until one day Sersi, her boyfriend Dane, and Sprite are attacked by a self-healing Deviant, the same power of their Leader Ajak. Ikaris shows up to help out and come to find out Ajak is dead and the team needs to round up to once again defeat the Deviants or risk human extinction. With Ajak dead, Sersi becomes the groups newest leader although she is quite insecure on why she was chosen. The movie goes into the search for the other members of the team and eventually we come to the plot twist where we find out that the Eternals were actually put on the earth to destroy the Deviants so that life could be created to make way for “The Emergence” where Celestials pop up out the ground like weeds and destroy the ENTIRE PLANET.
The reason the Eternals don’t know about their true purpose is because they don’t know who they really are. They thought that they were from Olympia when they were in fact synthetic beings created by Arishem who wipes their memories after every celestial event. Come to find out Ajak knew all along who they where she tried to convince Ikarus that they should stop the Emergence, Ikarus was like no and killed Ajak. When Sersi finds out he truth she pulls the team together to try and stop it. Sprite who we find out is in love with Ikarus turns into a backstabbing baby and tries to thwart the plan; however, they become successful in stopping the Celestial.
Arieshem is not happy and he takes Sersei, Phastos and Kingo and expresses his disdain for stopping his plan but ultimately spares earth and says ” I will return, for judgement,” after he scans their memories to decide if humans are worthy of living.
MY COMMENTARY:
First I love Angelina Jolie. If you know anything about Angelina she suffered through some pretty hardcore Mental Health issues and most likely still does. I would love to interview her one day and see how those struggles play a role in the parts she plays and how well she plays them.
I feel like this is one of Marvel’s most diverse movies yet. I love that they chose an actual deaf actor and had the cast learn sign language vs. someone playing deaf. I would protect Lauren Ridloff with my life. Also she was acting her ass off when she was dragging Ikarus’s ass in the end! Yeah she’s a new fave of mine. Also my Good sir, Brian Tyree Henry, plays a black male gay father in the movie and WE LOVE TO SEE IT! He was proud, he was loving, he was funny – just everything wholesome.
DID YAWL SEE THOSE POST CREDIT SCENES?! Harry Styles is in the MCU as Eros, Thano’s brother. Side Note: Thanos is an Eternal and he delayed the Celestial with the blip. Eros lets the Thena, Druig, and Makkari know that Sersei, Phastos and Kingo have been taken by Arieshem and seemingly are recruiting them to help rescue the other.
So we already know there’s a sequel in the works and I for one am READY FOR IT!
Dane was there in the beginning of the movie and the end and while his girlfriend was out busy saving the world he was learning more about his heritage. We see in the second post credit that he has in his possession the Ebony Blade, the weapon of the Black Night. We hear a voice ask if Dane is ready for the Ebony Blade and that voice is none other than Blade (Mahershala Ali).
Key Takeaways
- “When you love something, you protect it. It’s the most natural thing in the world. You’ve loved these people since the day we arrived. “ – Thena
- There is always time to do what’s right
- Love is what keeps the world going – Between family, between friends, between lovers no matter the orientation or status.
