Come on, Barbie, let’s go…cry

Synopsis

Stereotypical Barbie has a seemingly perfect life. She’s the Barbie everyone looks up to and strives to be, and yet life is just not giving for her. She begins to fear death, she gets cellulite, and the world around her literally becomes suffocating. Looking for answers to why her life is suddenly all doom and gloom, Barbie leaves Barbie-land to go find the girl in the real world who is causing her to break down. Along for the ride is a lovestruck Ken, who has stowed away in the Star Vette. Together they soon discover the joys and perils of living like humans.

Barbie, always the epitome of perfection, finds herself struggling to fit in with the messy, misogynistic world that surrounds her. Ken, on the other hand, is having a ball discovering that he’s “not just Ken” and that he too can have his own unique identity, beyond the confines of his Barbie-defined persona.

A whole lot more drama happens in Barbie’s pursuit to find purpose and Ken’s journey to self.

Spoilers follow.

Best

There are so many notable scenes and topics in this movie. One of the most notable moments of the storyline is when Barbie figures out that Sasha’s (the teenage daughter of a stressed-out Mattel employee named Gloria) teenage rebellion is not what has drawn her into the real world. It’s actually Gloria’s feelings of stress and loneliness from having to work a job that doesn’t value her opinions, struggling to connect with her daughter, and just reminiscing about simpler times when she could play with her Barbies that’s brought her.

I cry a lot but I feel like I’ve never quite cried the way I did watching the Barbie movie. This move is what it feels like to be totally and completely seen. It really touched my inner child who lost her light a long time ago. When Gloria gave her monologue of what it meant to be a woman in today’s world, I was choking back tears. She said out loud what so many women carry in their hearts, afraid to let the world hear for fear that they’d be less valued.

By the time we got to the end of the movie, there wasn’t a dry eye at the screening.  The scene of Barbie talking to Ruth(the creator of Barbie) completely took me out. When she asked Barbie to close her eyes and “feel” and Barbie essentially saw the lives of women across generations passing on the love, hopes, and dreams of the women who came before them and what it meant to be a part of that sisterhood – I was in there BAWLING. Sisterhood is important to me and I’ve been blessed with the cream of the crop!

Worst

The worst thing actually had nothing to do with the movie but everything to do with the reactions and so-called “boycotts” by a few groups of individuals. We are in 2023, people are gay, we have gotta stop pretending that most some men don’t act like they’re superior to women in every way, and we have to accept the fact that people don’t have to have the same religion, values, or principles you do. The outrage was so unnecessary. People who viewed the movie as “anti-men” and “woke” missed the whole premise of the movie and how unfortunate for them.

Weirdest

Weird Barbie of course! Which in fact was totally not weird lol. Weird Barbie represents what it feels like to be mishandled and the loss of childhood innocence. It’s something a lot of people can relate to. People rely on her but don’t want to be around her. She’s loud, she’s queer, she’s different, she’s complex and quite remarkable she’s the only person connected to the real world.

“I want to be the one imagining, not the idea.”

Best Red Carpet Look

I usually choose the best outfit from the red carpet premiere but I’m going to brag on myself this time! I was invited to the Atlanta Barbie movie screening and I showed out lol

I wanted to do something unique and different so I headed to my local library and 3D printed my own Barbie purse. If you live in Gwinett County GA you should check out the Learning Labs – pretty cool equipment that you can use for free! My outfit inspiration was Purple Passion Barbie which came out in my birth year of 1995.  I simply ate this look down and left no crumbs!

9.5 out of 10! Watch it and bring tissues!
