Ok. Ok. Ok. So boom Mortal Kombat, the game we all rushed home from school to play on our Nintendo 64 hit the big screen and home theaters via HBOMAX. The film was HIGHLY ANTICIPATED and completely crushed streaming and box office goals in mere hours of its release.
The Movie is Rated R as expected for its gruesome fighting and fatalities and does not disappoint when it comes to combo fighting moves and catch-phrases directly from the game itself. Classic characters such as Jax, Sub-Zero, Kano, Scorpion, Sonya Blade and even a CGI Goro + many more made it to the screen for a fight to keep the Outerworld from conquering the Earthrealm.
The plot is simple – villain Shang Tsung and the Outerworld have won 9 Mortal Kombats and are trying to circumvent the process of capturing the Earthrealm by killing off all of its champions or “Chosen Ones” instead of fighting fair in the 10th round (VILLAINS GONNA VILLAIN). The last few remaining champions now have to discover their “arcana” and fight off the villains in order to save the earthrealm. The movie is filled with tons of action, a double cross, and an accession from the dead that I won’t spoil for you today.
Now many critics are harping on the fact that there’s a solid 10 minutes where the champions have to train and discover their power however, I think it was a good addition to the movie to show the different ways people gain their strength – whether it’s overcoming a setback, fighting for family, or just destroying your enemy. Could it have been shorter yes but it fit smoothly into the sequence of the movie.
My takeaways
- I was full on expecting little miss Emily to pop out with power and handle business but perhaps another time.
- The movie ended with a clear sign that there will most likely be a sequel and I don’t think we needed that at all. I think we could have ended the movie right where it was. FULL STOP.
